Teaching Debate and Coaching a Debate Team
The school I work for, Hokuchiku High school, is one of the few schools that offer an English course. This means, on top of the required English Expression class, we offer extra classes called: Current English and Cross-Cultural Understanding. Students sign up for these classes and are typically motivated to learn English. In the English course, there is a focus in learning how to debate. Students are then selected and coached to represent their school in the annual English Debate Competition. See resource below for teaching and coaching debate. |
Annually, the Fukuoka Prefectural Board of Education holds a two-day professional development conference for English educators in Japan. Though it is officially referred to as the Assistant Language Teachers Skills Development Conference, the workshops and keynote presentations are valuable for both JTEs (Japanese Teachers of English) and ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers). Workshop themes in this conference typically consist of curriculum design, optimizing co-teaching, and information sessions regarding reforms and new mandates of English instruction from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
